9-5 Chassis Codes Explained

All Saabs have been delivered with different chassis set-ups. There are no 2 similar chassis and brake set-ups, even on the cars with consequential serial numbers rolled off the production line one after another in the same hour. Luckily, all the factory set-ups are coded in the special 10 position alphanumeric combination at the bottom of the sticker in the Nearside B-Pillar. Let’s learn what is hidden there.

It might look as the foreign language at the first sight, but when you know what you are looking for it is simple as switching the light. It really takes 5 minutes to understand it. Go to your car and have a look at the nearside wing plate under the bonnet for MY98-06 or nearside B-Pillar for MY06-10 and write bottom letters from the VIN sticker. It should look like HF-FG-J-J-42-33-AD-BC-CD-DC-

Don’t worry if yours is shorter or begins with numbers. We’ll get there. So, now when you have that code in hand, lets break it in the readable format. It contains 10 positions which when separated are pretty simple:

If you are missing the last 4 positions then nothing to worry. 1998-2005 Saabs do have a little bit simplified determination of brakes. You’ll find all info below. But let’s go ahead with the codes. To make it easier for you, we have created the full list of any characters can be ever seen on 9-5. To make it understandable, tables are grouped by the chassis components in the order they appear in the above code.

Please note. There are colours mentioned in some positions. It is factory label colour coding, so it is known on delivery that you got the right part. If there is additional Part Number in the Notes field, this means original part number is no longer supplied but was replaced with the new part number as part of cost optimisation.

Additionally. Please take in mind that this list is 9-5 enthusiast made according to Saab Parts Catalogue. With every effort to make this list as full as possible for MY98-10 we can’t guarantee that something is not missed. Any updates or corrections are highly welcomed. BRAKES:

Brakes were not chassis coded until 2006, instead they were determined by the market, engine size and power/weight of the car. If you don’t have last 4 positions un the chassis code and drive 1998-2005 Saab, please, have a look on the brake disc numbers and sizes, they are all unified since 2006, but refer to your service manual for pads and caliper selection We are looking forward to update this list shortly, to cover 1998-2006 brake details.

FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS:

Due to the safety concerns, Saab issued a suggestion to upgrade 2006 308mm brake callipers to more safe released in 2007 and initiated a Service Program. At this time, all owners who serviced their cars at the dealership during the warranty period should have calipers replaced. If this has not been done, please consider replacement yourself. See notes in the table.

As MY2010-2012 uses absolutely different coding system and not to overload your browsers as only front struts there are around 30 different versions, depending on the chassis, drive and market, so we are looking forward to make the same table for them, but, Rome was not bult in a day, as we all know.

    I have a 2006 9-5 2.3T and the front brake disc code on my sticker is AF. The chart above lists AD and AB only.

    Should the AB be AF? I do have the 308mm ventilated discs.

      Greg, Thanks for correcting. AF indeed is the 308mm ones. Fitted by default on Aero and as an option on Sports Chassis by the request of the customers byuing on order, not ready stock.
      Fixed the typo and corrected.
